What is a landing page, exactly?
Technically, a landing page is any page that web explorers land on during their cyber-travels. But in the world of digital marketing, it describes a web page with a very specific focus and purpose. Rather than simply provide information, your landing page seeks to accomplish a particular goal. That goal may be to move leads through the sales funnel, collect contact information for future marketing purposes or convert interested prospects into hard sales.
There are several types of landing pages you might come across:
Microsite: These are legitimate "mini websites" created around a single product, marketing campaign or sales goal. Microsites are usually distinct entities that live outside of your company's main website, with their own separate URL. There is no "About Us" page or similar pages that you might find on a typical company website. Microsites are powerful tools when you're trying to build brand awareness or launch a new product - or when you're aiming to reach a very specific audience segment. They can also be used to promote special in-person events.
Squeeze page: This is a short-copy page used to collect simple data such as a user's email address. It's usually used at the top of the sales funnel to capture leads, which are then added to a master mailing list.
Lead-generation page: A lead-generation page allows you to collect more detailed information about your prospective customers - such as their name, location and pain points. This in turn helps you create more relevant and targeted marketing messages for your audiences going forward.
Sales page: Sales pages have a tough job to do--they must convince people to buy your product or sign up for your program (i.e. fork over your hard-earned cash). If your product is expensive and complicated, chances are you'll need a longer, more detailed page to get the job done. If your offering is simpler, a shorter page may do the trick. Essential components to any sales page include a killer headline, clear and compelling body copy and a potent call to action (CTA).
